10 Cozy Musical Theatre Songs for Rainy Days

As we head through the month of March, we’ll be inviting a little more rain and a little less snow. What better way to celebrate than to cozy up with a cup of tea and a musical theatre playlist? Here are ten musical theatre songs that I love to pull out for a “rainy day,” whether I’m staring earnestly out the window or taking a midday walk.

1)    Singin’ in the Rain from Singin’ in the Rain

Of course, no rain playlist would be complete without this classic – especially if you want to dance in some puddles.

2)    A Soft Place to Land from Waitress

The strum of a guitar, Jessie Mueller’s beautiful voice, and soothing harmonies – this one is perfect for a long drive or curling up with good book.

3)    I’ve Never Been in Love Before from Guys and Dolls

This may seem like an odd choice. But a musical theatre playlist would not be complete without a golden age love song. And somehow, I can imagine Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown’s confession happening in the rain.

4)    Wondering from Bridges of Madison County

A thunderstorm is always a great time for a song about longing. The haunting melody of “Wondering” really does the trick.

5)    No One Is Alone from Into the Woods

This is undoubtedly one of the greatest musical theatre pieces of all time. It’s especially comforting during a tranquil rainstorm.

6)    Finishing the Hat from Sunday in the Park with George

Sometimes, rain is intense – much like the personality of George in this iconic Sondheim song. The piece’s rhythmic quality is ideal for those moments when it gets a little thundery.

7)    Only Us from Dear Evan Hansen

Just as a golden age love song is a necessity in any MT playlist, a contemporary love song is a must as well. This one will really add to your gentle ambiance.

8)    A Small Umbrella in the Rain from Little Women

This piece is underrated. It may not be as famous as Sutton Foster’s “Astonishing,” but it perfectly encapsulates budding romance…with a rain metaphor, no less.

9)    Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz

Sweet, simple, and from the heart – this classic is wonderful for when the final raindrops are falling.

10) Don’t Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl

Alright…this one is a bit cheeky. But it’s a must for when the sky is finally clearing up! I highly recommend the Barbra Streisand film version.

Happy Listening!
