Summer Movie League: Week 5

Recap:

This past weekend saw a beast taken down by a baby.  The Boss Baby exceeded all expectations, hitting $50.2 million for the weekend.  It also managed to raise its T-meter up from 27% to 49%.  That means $24.6 million in revenue to me.  The Boss Baby bested Beauty and the Beast (alliteration!), which came in 2nd with $45.4 million.  With a domestic total now at $393 million, it has hit the $250 million cap and solidified me in 1st place early on in the season, though Joe is not far behind.

Joe’s fourth release of the season, Ghost in the Shell, underperformed nearly as much as The Boss Baby overperformed.  Both were expected to take in something around $32-33 million.  The Boss Baby went far beyond that to $50.2 million while Ghost in the Shell only managed $18.7.  Based on the 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, that’s only $8.4 million for Joe on a movie he spent $12 on in the auction.  He also saw Power Rangers take a staggering 65% drop in its 2nd weekend, dropping to $14.3 million.

Lastly, Paula got on the board with The Zookeeper’s Wife making $3.3 million with a t-meter of 59%, good for $1.9 million.  It’s not much, but it was only released on 541 screens.  That will expand this week.  T2: Trainspotting expanded this past weekend to 140 screens.  It remains to see how wide that that will end up going, or if it will even get a wide release.

Preview:

This weekend is the release of the third (???) Smurfs film, Smurfs: The Lost Village.  It has 24 reviews so far and sits at 33%.  It could cut into the numbers for The Boss Baby.  Also releasing this week in a limited capacity is Gifted.  It has 7 reviews as of right now and a 43% t-meter.  It looks like it could be a three-way race between Beauty and the Beast, The Boss Baby, and Smurfs: The Lost Village for the top spot this weekend.  Beyond this weekend, no early reviews are out yet for The Fate of the Furious, its fate is still to be determined.  The Emoji Movie has been moved up a week to July 28th.
