FIRST LOOK: Hadestown Korea Cast Revealed!
On May 14th, production company S&Co released the twelve leading actors for the Korean premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. This is the musical’s first local-language production. As is custom, the lead roles will be rotated.
Hyung-gyun Cho, Kang-Hyun Park, and Woo-min Xu (Xiumin) were cast in the role of Orpheus, a dreamer with powerful musical talent. Hyung-gyun Cho has previously swept the Korea Musical Awards for Best Actor in Korean original The Devil as well as Frank Wildhorn’s Cyrano in 2019. Kang-Hyun Park made his musical debut in Catch Me If You Can (2012) with additional starring roles including Kinky Boots and Frank Wildhorn’s The Man Who Laughs in 2018. Xiumin is a member of the popular K-pop group EXO, making his hotly anticipated return to the stage here after military service.
The role of messenger god Hermes is played by Jae-rim Choi, last year’s Korea Musical Award winner for Best Actor in Matilda, and Hong-seok Kang, who has played a leading role in various works such as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Elisabeth.
Persephone will be alternated by Sun-young Kim, nicknamed 'Queen of the Musical World', and Hye-na Park, who sang the Korean version of the iconic 'Let It Go' for the “Frozen” movie soundtrack.
Eurydice will be played by Hwan-hee Kim and Soo-ha Kim (West End’s Miss Saigon).
Hades, the master and king of the underworld, will be played by Hyun-jun Ji (Amadeus), Jun-mo Yang (Les Miserables) and Woo-hyung Kim (Ghost).
Written by Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown premiered Off-Broadway in 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop, and played Canadian and London engagements prior to opening on Broadway in 2019. Mitchell's work re-imagines the mythical story of Orpheus and Eurydice with a Tony-winning score that blends modern folk music with New Orleans–style jazz.
Hadestown will play a limited run engagement at the LG Art Center in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul beginning August 2021. First tickets will open in June with additional casting to be announced at a later date.
