5 UK Shows You Need to See

There is nothing quite like seeing a smash hit musical in the West End, or witnessing a world-renowned opera in one of the UK’s most impressive theatres. With so many great performances on offer in the UK this year and next, we’ve put together a list of five shows you should not miss!

Les Misérables

Les Misérables is the world’s longest running musical and has been showing in London’s West End for over 30 years. The show is set in 19th Century France and follows a former convict trying to rebuild his life, while a ruthless detective hunts him for breaking his parole. The story is centred around several powerful themes including revolution, convictions, unrequited love and self-sacrifice and features emotional ballads throughout. However, despite the seriousness of these topics, the cast still manage to create a light-heighted and fun atmosphere. This timeless show is one of the most popular musicals ever, and has received an incredible 140 awards since it was first released. So if you haven’t seen it yet, then you’re missing out!

Andre Rieu

Violin master, conductor and showman Andre Rieu, will be back in the UK with a brand new springtime UK 2020 tour. The ‘Modern King of Waltz’ will be joined by his highly-talented 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra - the largest private orchestra in the world! Dutch-born Andre Rieu will be playing his world-famous Stradivarius violin and promises to create an extravagant concert full of surprises. The show will include an impressive selection of romantic, emotional ballads, alongside some of his most celebrated world-class waltzes. Andre Rieu is world-renowned for his showman tendencies and ability to create a colourful and energetic atmosphere at all of his concerts. Fans are always encouraged to get involved and dance in the aisles! You can expect an unforgettable night of fun, excitement, and some of the world’s best classical music, so it’s worth getting booking tickets or travel packages asap!

Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia the film was the highest grossing musical film ever released and the musical version was just as popular. More than 65 million people all around the world have seen and fallen in love with this incredible story - and for good reason! Mamma Mia the musical is full of upbeat ABBA songs, beautiful costumes, and an incredible cast, making it one of London’s best feel-good shows! The touching storyline is centered around a romantic wedding on a paradise Greek island. The bride, Sophie, has no one to walk her down the aisle, so decides to invite three of her mother’s ex-lovers to the day, in an attempt to reveal the identity of her father. Sophie’s mother, Donna, is transported back to her youth and relives her past in a tale of love, laughter and friendship, told through twenty two of ABBA’s greatest hits. This infectiously funny and light hearted show is the perfect fun night out for any ABBA fan! 

The London Symphony Orchestra

The London Symphony Orchestra was founded in in 1904 by a handful of musicians. Nowadays, it is London’s oldest running orchestra and consists of nearly 100 highly talented musicians including, acclaimed music director Sir Simon Rattle, and world-class conductors Michael Tilson Thomas and Gianandrea Noseda. It is regarded as being one of the  world's leading orchestras and was named as one of the top five orchestras in the world by Gramophone. The famous orchestra is known for its award-winning performances, its energetic atmosphere, and its community programme, LSO Discovery. This is an outreach programme that supports and trains aspiring musicians and artists. The London Symphony Orchestra put on around 120 shows per year, so there’s no excuse to not get a ticket and see one of their incredible shows!

Cendrillon

Fiona Shaw has had a successful career both on the stage and screen, and now her new version of the Massenet’s 1889 Cinderella will be one of the highlights of Glyndebourne 2019. This beautiful opera will be making its debut there with Danielle de Niese playing the lead role of Cendrillon and Kate Lindsey playing Prince Charming. The show is based on the well-known fairy tale Cinderella, and follows Cendrillon as she struggles to live with her new step-mum and step-sisters following the tragic death of her mother. The opera is bursting with incredible musical talent, lavish costumes, and a magical cast. This extravagantly over the top show is sure to give you a night to remember!
