Chloe Bennet, Sorry If We Question Your Choice of Boyfriend

Earlier in the year, I applauded Chloe Bennet's reasoning for going by her stage name of Bennet rather than her birth name of Wang. Bennet revealed that she had changed her last name because she was having a hard time getting work in Hollywood. She decided to change her last name, to “Bennet,” her father’s first name.

“Oh, the first audition I went on after I changed my name, I got booked,” Bennet shared to The Daily Beast last year. “So that’s a pretty clear little snippet of how Hollywood works.”

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star went on to say in a Tweet, "Hollywood is racist and wouldn't cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable. I'm doing everything I can, with the platform I have, to make sure no one has to change their name again."

It was a powerfully truthful statement that resonated with many Asian American and Pacific Islander(AAPI) performers because many have done the same thing or wish they could.

For a moment, Chloe Bennet became a leader in the fight for casting equality and AAPI representation.

Then she started dating her boyfriend.

In case you don't read the Hollywood gossip mags (I do, so you don't have to), it's been confirmed that Bennet is currently dating Youtube...."star"....Logan Paul.

Yes, the same Logan Paul who was internationally ridiculed last year for exploiting suicide while visiting Aokigahara, a forest on Mt. Fuji in Japan colloquially known as the "Suicide Forest" for the unusually high number of suicides that take place there. Even going as for as filming a body found there.

Yes, the same Logan Paul who didn't mind that his legion of fans harassed fellow vlogger Reina Scully with racist harassment such as ""Ching chang Chung. Shut the f*ck up you suicide f*ggots. Let the J*ps kill themselves. LOGANG for LIFE."

Yes, the same Logan Paul who, on the same trip to Japan, did all this too.

Yes, the same Logan Paul who, in a Vine video, slapped a "made in china" sticker on Daniel “DAN” Trung Nghia Nguyen, aka Nampaikid on Instagram, who happens to be Vietnamese-American. But details like that don't matter to a racist d-bag like Paul.

Yes, the same Logan Paul who has been touting racist jokes towards Asians and others, FOR YEARS.

So to find out that Chloe Bennet has apparently been dating this (can't come up with a civilized word for him), pardon us if we're a bit confused.

She's even gone as far as defending her choice of boyfriend by saying, "Cause he's kind, creative, funny, vibrantly curious about life, weird as [expletive] in all the best ways, a big dork, and he's one of my best friends," Bennet said. "It doesn't make sense to a lot of people, but it doesn't have too."

To be clear, this isn't a typical opposite attracts or nice girl brings the bad boy home to meet her folks. This is someone who touts herself as being a leader for AAPI representation while dating someone who has made his career mocking and fetishizing the same people.

This isn't putting up with weird fashion choices or not putting the caps back on the toothpaste, this is dating someone who has been openly racist towards your ethnicity. How that's not deal breaker is beyond me.

Her relationship with Paul is problematic because it's probably one of the reasons why he felt so comfortable making such jokes or filming what he did in Japan. If his half-Asian girlfriend thinks he's funny, that's all he probably needed.

So, sorry if this upsets you Chloe, it just sucks to find out you're not the hero we though you were.
