A little while back we released some of our way too early Tony predictions, but now that the nominations are just a month away, and with very little left to open on Broadway, it's time to start thinking about who might be hearing their named called on June 12th.
So with that in mind, for the next couple of days, I'll be releasing my Tony nominations and possible winners.
Today's Category: Best Revival of a Musical
Is it just me or has this been an amazing year for musical revivals? While last year there was a clear choice of what should've won(The King and I), this year seems wide open. So much so, I could very well see a couple of shows winning this award with little argument against them. Let's break it down pending Tony eligibility.
- Fiddler on the Roof
- She Loves Me
- The Color Purple
- Shuffle Along
- Spring Awakening
On the Bubble
- Dames at Sea
Like I said, this category is loaded. What is going to be a huge factor in this race is if Shuffle Along is ruled as a revival. If it is, then that would make six eligible shows which would allow for four nominees, if not then it would be five eligible shows which would allow three nominees.
If it's three nominees, I would be shocked if any of the locks weren't on there. If it's four, my money would be with Shuffle Along added to the group. That sadly leaves out the awe inspiring Spring Awakening out of this race. While Spring Awakening was fantastic and certainly deserves a nomination, its early closing and with all the other nominees currently running, will work against its chances of being nominated. However, there could always be an upset here and they could slip above The Color Purple or Fiddler on the Roof for a nod.
Dames at Sea's chances of netting a single nomination are slim and I certainly don't expect it to be included here.
Probable Winner: Too close to call but early money is with She Loves Me. But again, I wouldn't be shocked nor would I have a problem if any other these other shows won.
