What to Expect from an Open Audition

Open auditions. They’re a daunting aspect, whether you’re a seasoned pro or it’s your first time and usually depending on what you’re actually auditioning for- they can all vary.

The first main thing to expect is QUEUEING!! You have to remember this is an “open” audition- anyone who’s anyone can audition. This means that the queues are long! At my most recent open audition- the actual audition didn’t start until 9 am but when I arrived at half 8 (thinking I was too early) there were already around 150 people in front of me! Which brings me onto my next point….

It’s never too early to arrive. As I said- I arrived at half 8 thinking I was too early but found wrong! Obviously don’t camp outside the audition studios overnight but it’s always a good idea to be there at least an hour early. There have sadly been occasions where people have turned up “on time” and the queues are so long they have to sadly turn people away.

Be prepared for a lot of waiting around- make sure you bring water and some quick (not messy either!) snacks to keep up your energy- also make sure you eat enough before your audition, as sometimes they’re so busy you don’t get a chance to have a break!

Depending on what you are auditioning for can also depend on what you do that day. My recent open call only had 2 different stages: animation skills and dancing. Whereas some can also require singing and acting. Be prepared for anything! Whenever I go to an audition I always have a song and monologue prepared just in case they spring it on you! I find it’s always good to be over-prepared than have to quickly think of a song or monologue.

My last main point- don’t get disappointed. Be prepared to not hear your name for callbacks. This is a bit of a horrible one but unfortunately, that’s the life of auditions. It may not be your time, or you may not be what they’re looking for. You have to remember- as I said. It’s an OPEN call- there will be lots of people there! Never doubt your performance skills if that’s the case- you’re a star! It’s hard to stand out in open auditions that’s why my best advice is to be yourself- perform like it’s the last time you ever will and own it!

So, to anyone who may have an open audition coming up, whether you’ve been to loads before or it’s your first. Break a leg! I hope this has given some advice and shows you what to expect and how to prepare for an open audition!
