The 30-year-old Broadway actress originated the role of Eliza in Lin Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton, and with the release of the filmed show on Disney+ her recognition has only accelerated.

Soo is an American actress of Chinese and European descent. She grew up in Illinois and graduated from Juilliard School with a BFA. This Tony-nominated actress sometimes called “Pippa” is in my opinion the most magnetic lady to grace the stage.

When Hamilton on Broadway was filmed, Soo had just turned 26 years old, but first became acquainted with her character Eliza a few years before when she joined the show pre-Broadway. As Eliza, we see a committed and gentle heroine. Through Soo’s gorgeous vocals she creates a full and complete character as a woman, wife, mother, philanthropist,  and storyteller. I’ve had the privilege to see a few different women play Elizabeth “Eliza” Hamilton, and each one was astonishing. However, something about Soo is compelling on a different level. She gives a sense of ease even during high stakes. In her early 20s, she embodies a timeless matriarch, the driving force of the story without forcing a thing.

Goddess Pippa Moments from Hamilton film:

  • Her entire performance of Helpless

  • Fire stunts

  • The whisper of “I’m not sorry” when Alexander comes home

  • When she sings, “Oh I can’t wait to see you again” at the end of the show

  • Adorable Beatboxing

  • “...when my time is up, have I done enough” is the most touching call to action in the history of ever

Soo is effortless in her talent. Her honesty pours out with every performance in a way I find unmatched. She is completely unique in her presence and delivery in every role she is cast in.

A few other reasons I love Phillipa Soo:

  • The girl can rock a low pony. I know I can’t do that.

  • Soo uses her social media to speak out against inequality and injustice.

  • She is an early 90s millennial.

I’m looking forward to what the future brings for her career. I would love to see her as “Belle” in a revival of Beauty and the Beast or “Kathy” in The Last Five Years. Honestly, her possibilities are endless in my opinion. She is a Broadway Goddess no questions asked. Hamilton and Amélie are just the beginning.

Thank you for attending my presentation on the unmatched and unbelievable Phillipa Soo.
