Yes, I'm ready for a 'Practical Magic' musical

This October marks the 25th anniversary of the film “Practical Magic”. The film, based on the novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as two sisters who descended from a long line of witches. Raised by their aunts(played by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing) after their parents' death from a family curse, the sisters were taught the uses of practical magic as they grew up.

The film wasn’t exactly a hit at the time. It flopped at the box office and critics weren’t kind to it either. But, over the past 25 years, the film has achieved a cult classic status since its release with a dedicated fan base.

When talking with some friends of mine about movies that could make for some interesting musical adaptations, the thought of a “Practical Magic” musical generated a great discussion. Transforming this beloved story into a musical could attract both existing fans and new audiences interested in experiencing the enchanting tale in a different format.

With the increasing popularity of fantasy and magical stories in theatre(“Frozen”, “Harry Potter”), a "Practical Magic" musical would tap into the current interest in supernatural themes, making it relevant and appealing to contemporary audiences.

When it comes to the score, someone like Duncan Shiek or Anaïs Mitchell could be perfect to capture the essence of "Practical Magic” with enchanting melodies, and emotionally charged ballads. If you told me that Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová were writing this musical, I’d give you money right away.

Then there’s the potential for inventive staging. The mystical elements, spells, and supernatural aspects of the story could be brought to life through imaginative choreography, special effects, and musical numbers, creating a visually stunning and captivating theatrical experience.

A "Practical Magic" musical could leverage its magical themes, emotional depth, and existing fan base to create a visually enchanting and emotionally resonant theatrical experience that appeals to a wide range of audiences. It has the potential to bring a beloved story to a new medium, allowing fans to rediscover the magic and allure of the Owens sisters on stage. I’m more than ready for it.
