Chita Rivera Passes Away at 91

It was reported today that Broadway legend, Chita Rivera, passed away at the age of 91. It’s hard to find the words to describe such a legendary career and the impact that she made for generations of performers. But I’ll try.

The actor-singer-dancer originated the role of Anita in the original Broadway production of “West Side Story,” as well as the title character in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and the role of Velma Kelly in the original Broadway run of “Chicago.”

Chita Rivera was Broadway’s first real triple threat, and you could argue that she was also it’s last. Few have mastered the craft the way she did. An incredible performer and an absolute professional offstage, you will hardly find a single Broadway veteran, who wont sing her praises.

Beyond her multiple Tony, awards and other accolades, Rivera, blazed the trail for aspiring performers from every race and background.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones who have seen her perform live and to have been in her presence. I saw her at “Nine” when it was on Broadway, and again in “The Visit”, which marked her last performance on 42nd Street. Those moments will be burned into my memory.

Thankfully, because of her many achievements and performances that can still be viewed on streaming networks and other recordings, her impact will last many more lifetimes. So thank you Chita Rivera, for all that you gave us, and how you inspired us to step into the spotlight.
