Breaking down the Tonys: Best Choreography

by Chris Peterson, OnStage Blog Founder

With the Tony Awards right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to break down each category. Let’s discuss the nominees, predict some winners, and discuss who may have deserved to be on the list.

Today, we’re continuing with Best Choreography. Here are the nominees:

  • Annie-B Parson, Here Lies Love

  • Camille A. Brown, Hell's Kitchen

  • Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman, The Outsiders

  • Justin Peck, Illinoise

  • Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll, Water for Elephants

There are a couple of things in this category that I love, but there is one glaring omission. Let’s start out with the good, this was an exceptionally strong year for choreography. A ton of potential nominees and the final list here is strong. The pleasant surprise is that Tony voters didn’t forget Parson’s incredible work on Here Lies Love, which closed back in November.

The glaring omission is Lorin Latarro. Between The Who’s Tommy and The Heart of Rock and Roll, she put out some incredible work this year and was worthy of a nomination for either.

As for who wins? While I think that The Outsiders is going to be gaining some steam heading into awards night, I still think this is Peck’s award to lose, and I fully expect him to take home his 2nd Tony Award(He previously won for 2018’s Carousel). Everything I’ve heard about Illinoise is that it is a dance revelation and such praise usually will land one the award.
