One of musical theatre’s biggest mysteries will finally be solved with a planned prequel to one of the most popular musicals of all-time - Just how exactly did Sandy and Danny meet?

Yes, we’re apparently getting a prequel to Grease.

It was announced today that Paramount will be moving forward with the big screen project and have tapped director Brett Haley to helm the project.

According the a press release:

It will reportedly focus on the fling between Grease protagonists Danny and Sandy that occurred before the school year started. No timeline or cast has been revealed. Written for the stage by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease was turned into a film in 1978, featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as Danny and Sandy. A sequel, Grease 2, was released in 1982, but did not feature those characters.

A television spin-off of Grease, titled Grease: Rydell High, is also reportedly in the works for the HBO Max streaming service.

It’s hard to know what Paramount’s motive is for bringing this to the big screen. Most of what we know about these two characters are told to us in the song “Summer Lovin’” and we caught a glimpse of the end of their summer romance in the first moments of the original film.

In my opinion, the more interesting story, and I can’t believe I said “interesting”, is what happens after Sandy and Danny theoretically fly off in the sky. What happened to them after they “landed” back in reality? Call it Grease 1/2 or something. I don’t understand the need to explore these characters but then again, I don’t run movie studios.
