Trying to figure out the hoopla surrounding "Spotify Wrapped"
“On December 2, Spotify released their signature “Spotify Wrapped” feature for the year, and just as expected, every participant of the streaming platform fawned over it once it hit their accounts. This year-in-review feature for music lovers that is personalized to each listener featured everything from top five songs, to analytics on what genre was listened to the most. The release of the feature was such a hit, made clear by the overwhelming reaction by listeners.”
Be Humble On Stage, But Believe In Yourself
“I think there's a misconception in our society that we shouldn't boast, so we don't let the good stuff sink in. That's the wrong approach. Let it sink in, know the difference between confidence and cocky, but know all of the good traits you have as well as areas of opportunity.”
The eternal value of stolen props
“In an industry as changeable and brutal as theatre, memories and the items that enhance them are worth their weight in gold, not only to keep us connected to the shows and people in our past but also to remind us during the darker days of our careers why we do what we do.”
I tried making a 10 minute improv musical. Here’s how it went
“People should create because they like it, it improves their mood and it develops their skills. This is where my 10-minute musical lives.”
My theatre "thank you" list
“Thanksgiving is an ageless tradition, full of friends, family, delicious food, and gratitude. During this season of thanks, I wanted to talk about all the things I am thankful for in theatre.”
Sometimes You Need to Readjust Your Goals
“About a year ago, I decided to take a break from acting. I decided to focus on my job and on other important priorities in my life. I didn’t realize that the time I spent away from acting would cause me to be more critical and aware of what my next steps would be. To be honest, I’m not sure what they are.”
An autistic actress deconstructs Sia’s 'Music' mess
“My anger stems from the fact that Sia knowingly and deliberately packaged an offensive, reductive, and infantilizing appropriation of our neurology as self-aggrandizing inspiration porn for consumption by non-autistics.”
Ways to make live theatre more accessible
“Accessibility matters and it isn’t hard. It just takes a little bit of effort, and I promise that effort will mean so much to those of us who benefit from it.”
What We’re Losing: A sobering follow up to the arts crisis that never should have been
“Arts workers have nowhere to go. We are not merely out of work, we are prevented from work. To have the promise of one’s entire life ripped away over and over again, becoming more agonizing with each pull, isn’t just infuriating, it’s exasperating.”
Can Someone Support Trump and Be a Theatre Fan?
“I believe it to be extremely dangerous to accuse people who do not vote for a specific political party of not supporting theatre.”
Misunderstood Musicals: "The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County"
“Today let's look at an original Stephen King musical. Wait! What’s that? Stephen King wrote a musical? Yes. Yes, he did and with John Mellencamp, no less. It took them close to a dozen years to get it on stage; the end result is entitled The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. “
When To/Not to Change The Time Period of a Show
Lately, it’s become a theme to change the time-period and/or setting of a popular play/musical. For example, I once saw a post-apocalyptic version of Leonard Bernstein’s Peter Pan, and believe it or not it worked! I personally enjoy seeing popular shows re-imagined, but I believe that there is a time and place to make that dramatic decision.
