Last weekend OnStage Blog Founder, Chris Peterson, appeared on The Kelly Phang Show on MSNBC to discuss the controversial production of ‘Hamilton’ at a Texas Church.

“Around ‘Hamilton’s release on DIsney+, many online began to ask: why isn’t every musical given this treatment? Like many things in show business, the answer to this question comes down to the business.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda has released a statement on the unauthorized production of ‘Hamilton’ which was performed at a Texas church last weekend. “Grateful to all of you who reached out about this illegal, unauthorized production. Now lawyers do their work,” he said.

“While seeing what the Door McAllen did with ‘Hamilton’ may seem unprecedented, it should be noted that this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. In fact, OnStage Blog has obtained a video of the entire performance of “Disney’s Beauty & the Beast” the church produced in 2018 that featured similar alterations to the script.”

Over the past couple of days, there has been a lot of discussion over the unauthorized performance of ‘Hamilton’ by a church in Texas. Many have been asking what exact changes the church made to the script. While we can’t post the entire video here, we can post some snippets of their edits. So here are some of them.

The team at ‘Hamilton’ have released the following statement regarding the unauthorized production of the show which occurred over the weekend. “Hamilton does not grant amateur or professional licenses for any stage productions and did not grant one to The Door Church.”

“There’s nothing about the role of Ebeneezer Scrooge that says he can’t be Deaf. There’s nothing that says that the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella can’t be blind. There’s nothing that pigeonholes anyone when you remember that folks with disabilities are people, just like everyone else, who can be misers or fairy godmothers or flirtatious townswomen. That openness is, inherently, authentic casting.”

A church in McAllen, TX is claiming today that it had permission from the legal team at ‘Hamilton’ to perform Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning show along with additions into the script to illustrate the teachings of Jesus Christ and deliver an anti-LGBTQ sermon at the conclusion of the performance.

“A church in Texas is coming under fire today performing ‘Hamilton’ without obtaining rights to the show as well as changing the text and adding an anti-LGBTQ sermon at the end of the show.”

It’s been six years since ‘Hamilton’ dominated the 70th annual Tony Awards. So let’s take a look back and ask if it really deserved all of the awards it won.
