OnScreen Review: "Sound of Metal"
“Sound of Metal offers a unique look into a deaf community and it features several commendable performances, none more so than Riz Ahmed in the lead. It’s a technically impressive and immersive experience in the sound department too.”
OnScreen Review: "Mank"
“‘You cannot capture a man’s entire life in two hours. All you can hope is to leave the impression of one.’ This is a perfect encapsulation of Mank.”
OnScreen Review: "Hillbilly Elegy"
“If you’ve seen any movie where a successful person has to return home to deal with family problems they’ve tried to leave in the past, most of this movie will feel familiar to you.”
OnScreen Review: "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm"
“It’s been 14 years, but Baron Cohen is still able to shock with his characters, the uncomfortable situations he puts people into, and his willingness to let people say the cringiest things.”
OnScreen Review "Tenet"
Tenet is a fitting film to be reopening movie theaters. The film is filled with trademark Nolan bombast and time puzzles. It’s basically Nolan’s Bond film.
OnScreen Review: "The Old Guard"
“The classic formula of the young new blood being brought into a secretive world and guided by an experienced and often weather or grizzled veteran.”
OnScreen Review: "Da 5 Bloods"
“Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods adds needed scope to Vietnam War movies and gives dimension to the stories of black veterans.”
Breaking down "Speech & Debate"
“Here’s a detailed plot synopsis + my thoughts on the good, the bad, and the heckin’ problematic of the 2017 film adaption of the play by the same name.”
OnScreen Review: "Emma"
“Director Autumn de Wilde’s Emma is a Jane Austen adaptation that is accessible for 21st century audiences.”
OnScreen Review: "The Invisible Man"
“The film is effective in creating a tense domestic horror thriller.”
OnScreen Review: "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey"
“This movie is a solid improvement over Suicide Squad, but doesn’t rise to the level of Wonder Woman, Shazam, or even Aquaman.”
OnScreen Review: 'Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice' - An Emotional Reflection
Released in late 2019, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice was shown in theatres. It’s now available to stream and purchase on physical media as well. It’s very touching to hear her in her own words, and how humble she is, even having been one of the biggest superstars in the world, while some of the world’s other biggest superstars have nothing but glowing accolades and the utmost respect for her.
OnScreen Review: "Cats" is really not that bad
I wish there would have been more ‘good moments’ in this Cats as there could have been. Sigh.
OnScreen Review: "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker"
“J.J. Abrams and company do their best here, but they are too beholden to fan service and trying to satisfy everyone that the final result is a movie that is a jack of all trades, master of none.”
OnScreen Review: "Jumanji: The Next Level"
“Jumanji: The Next Level is exactly the kind of action adventure movie that works well on the big screen and has wide audience appeal and should be a crowd pleaser like its predecessor.”
OnScreen Review: "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood"
“If there was a mantle for the legacy of Jimmy Stewart, Hanks would probably be the one to have that mantle. He has an earnestness and sincerity and generosity as an actor that suits him well for this role.”
OnScreen Review: "Jojo Rabbit"
“Waititi is a gifted comedic mind, as anyone who has seen any of his work outside of Thor: Ragnarok well knows, so it’s not a surprise that he would do something unconventional as his next project. Jojo Rabbit is certainly unconventional, but also of a piece with some of his earlier films.”
OnScreen Review: "Knives Out"
Knives Out is a delectable film, full of clever twists and laughs. Rian Johnson and company have put together a masterful entry in the murder mystery genre of film-making.
OnScreen Review: "Frozen II"
“Frozen II is sure to be a hit with kids; and for parents, well, at least they will have some newer songs to throw into the Frozen playlist rotation. It’s a little darker, and a little less fresh, but it is a suitable sequel.”
OnScreen Review: "Parasite"
Like most Bong Joon-ho films, Parasite is multi-faceted and a bit of a genre-bender; a dark, bubbling concoction of comedy, drama, and thriller that is loaded with social commentary.
