‘Moulin Rouge’ set to reopen on Broadway on September 24th

'Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ will be reopening on Broadway on September 24th, 2021.

Fan Presale begins May 17 at 10 A.M. EDT. They can be purchased using Seatgeek.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by John Logan. The musical is based on the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! directed by Baz Luhrmann and written by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.

Moulin Rouge! opened on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with previews starting on June 28, 2019, and officially opening on July 25.

What casting will look like for this show will be closely watched as lead actress Karen Olivo stepped down from their Tony-nominated role of Satine. In an Instagram post, they explained their decision to leave the show in response to the awful Scott Rudin allegations as well as the industry’s failure to create safe spaces and opportunities for BIPOC artists and industry employees.

“I could easily go back to a show and make a lot of money,” the Tony Award winner said in the post, going on to say and repeat: “Building a better industry is more important than putting money in my pockets.”

In a statement, the producers of Moulin Rouge!—which include the Australia-based Global Creatures as well as Jujamcyn Theatres, which owns and operates the musical's Broadway home, the Al Hirschfeld—said the production is "forever indebted to Karen Olivo’s artistry, passion, and craft in creating the role of Satine on stage." They continued: "We applaud and support Karen’s advocacy work to create a safe, diverse, and equitable theatre industry for all. Karen has been an indelible influence on our show from its beginning, and words cannot properly express our gratitude. We wish Karen great success, and above all, love."

The musical is currently nominated for 13 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
