Geno Segers’ Apology Appears to Be Gone. That Didn’t Take Long.

Well, Geno Segers apology apparently had a shorter run than his Hadestown contract.

Last week, Segers issued a public apology after his years of controversial videos and social media commentary resurfaced following his casting as Hades in Hadestown. The backlash was swift, and on August 2, producers announced that Segers and the production had “mutually agreed” that he would no longer join the Broadway company.

On August 3, Segers posted an apology saying he accepted “full responsibility” for his words and was committed to “listening” and “educating” himself.

Now, that apology appears to have been removed from his social media presence.

That certainly makes me question how seriously we were supposed to take it in the first place.

I already thought the apology was weak. It never specifically mentioned transgender people, despite much of the controversy centering on videos where Segers mocked pronoun use, questioned transgender rights, and misogynistic comments toward women. 

Instead, we got vague references to “affected communities,” promises to learn, and a declaration that he accepted responsibility.

And now even that appears to be disappearing.

Maybe this is part of some larger plan to clean up his social media presence and rebuild his image. That would hardly be surprising. The original videos that caused this controversy began disappearing once people started paying attention to them.

But deleting something doesn’t erase it. We published it. Search engines indexed it. The internet is forever.

And if Segers truly wants to demonstrate that his apology meant something, removing the apology itself is a pretty strange place to start.

In fact, leaving the apology posted could be a sign of strength: he made mistakes, learned from them, and will become a better person as a result.

But if his apology was only posted so he could simply relaunch his career at a later date, then he will truly have learned nothing, and that will be the saddest part of this whole episode.
