Review: 'A Christmas Carol' at Shaw Festival's Royal George Theatre, Niagara on the Lake Ontario
Ryan deSouza’s musical direction also embraces the mirthful antics of this production. Common street instruments fill the house with seasonal cheer. The opening of the second act pulls us in, as a simple rhythmic bell ringing charms us into our seats. The harmonies of the cast were magical.
Review: 'No Change in the Weather' - A Newfoundland Musical at The CAA Theatre
‘No Change in the Weather’ becomes an authentic East Coast celebration of song, of dance, of laughter…and OF LIFE. I’m still thinking of it today as I write this article about the tremendous joy on the faces of these versatile artists and their kinetic energy that was transferred to me in the house.
Review: 'Shakespeare's Will' by Vern Thiessen and staged by Winnipeg, Manitoba's Shakespeare in the Ruins
To quote Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill about the recent upcoming film version of her parents in Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Being the Ricardos’: “It’s frickin’ amazing.” The same holds true here for Thiessen’s engaging script and this Shakespeare in the Ruins consuming production filmed by Sam Vint.
Review: 'Cast Iron' binaural audio drama presented by Toronto's Factory and Obsidian Theatres
Sensitively and compassionately directed by Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu, ‘Cast Iron’ becomes a tale of dignity, grace, and humour thanks to the finely distinguished vocal work of Alison Sealy-Smith supported by the solid work of John Gzowski as Sound Designer and Composer.
Review: “Puffy Hair” by Zoë Geltman presented at The Tank
“Zoë Geltman’s “Puffy Hair” transforms beyond stand-up comedy to shocking and delicious intimacy, as mesmerizing as drunk-meeting the girl in the bathroom simultaneously melting and grandstanding for boy advice that never fails to bond the toilet’s tenants together.”
Review: 'Mixtape' World premiere at Toronto's Crow's Theatre
Under Chris Abraham’s perceptive direction, Zorana Sadiq remained in complete artistic control of her emotions continuously as she shared segments of her life growing up and recounted some moments within her family that were sometimes poignant, sometimes difficult…
Broadway Review: “The Lehman Trilogy”
“Despite the quality of the work – and it is impressive – “The Lehman Trilogy” constantly reminds the audience of the dynamics of the all-too-easy transition from entrepreneurship to corporate greed, the kind of greed that has grown exponentially after the Stock Market Crash of 2018 and resulted in the collapse of the Lehman Brothers empire that began in 1844 as Heyum Lehmann stood on a wooden dock in New York harbor fulfilling his dream of America.”
Review: 'Angel' produced by Toronto's Opera Atelier
‘Angel’ is an exalted work of music and dance worthy of Milton, Rilke, and a superb cast.
Review: “The Jigsaw Bride” at First Folio
““The Jigsaw Bride” presents so many conundrums in ways that provide no easy answers. Who is right? Who is wrong? What happens when needs clash?”
Review: “Legally Blonde” at Metropolis Performing Arts Center
““Legally Blonde” is always a fun, feel-good musical and the one at The Metropolis Performing Arts Center has much to recommend it, even if it falls short of all that it could be.”
Review: “Matriarch” by The Roots and Wings Project
“Every piece feels full of great reverence and respect for mothers and the women we have in our lives. After viewing you will likely go and call all of the strong women in your life and thank them and tell them you love them.”
Review: 'Happy Days' at Flint Repertory Theatre
“There is something about “Happy Days” that feels very 2021. Watching a woman sink slowly into an inescapable morass while being as determined as possible to stick to a routine, to keep a stiff upper lip and to remain calm doesn’t seem all that strange this year.”
Review: ‘My Fair Lady’ at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre
“It was a thing of beauty seeing the exquisite Shereen Ahmed walk onstage at The Dolby Theatre dressed as the flower peddling Eliza Doolittle.”
Review: 'Songs for a New World' at Farmers Alley
“Farmer’s Alley reopened its indoor, in-person season with a production that testified to the courage of the human spirit, to its resilience, to the way everyone has persevered through hard times unique to each individual.”
Review: 'Touch' A World Premiere by Lighthouse Immersive Space
Even though I have no formal background in dance and movement doesn’t hold me back from saying if a production is good… ‘Touch’ is more than just good.
Review: “Give Me Away” Part 2 by Mac Rogers
“I don’t know if there is any more coming in this story or in this world but it feels as though this creative team has left themselves with a rich enough story to make anything possible. And I will be eagerly waiting for it.”
Review: 'The Lifespan of a Fact' at Theatre Nova
“Theatre Nova has re-opened its doors with a thoughtful show that entertains while presenting challenging questions.”
Review: 'THE ENIGMATIST' is Impressively Clever
“What a joy to see live theatre in Los Angeles again. ”THE ENIGMATIST" made its West Coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse on September 23, 2021, with the handsome puzzle-solving Harvard graduate, David Kwong, mesmerizing his audience in this one-man show.”
Commentary: +(dix) by Danse Côté, a film by Vikram Dasgupta, a live to stream premiere
The title +(dix) confused me when I spoke with Vikram. Our conversation went well as I learned a great deal more about dance, but I wasn’t sure if I truly understood what the title means.
Review: 'Moby: A Whale of a Tale' by Pirate Life, Toronto
I certainly hope this ‘Moby’ returns for another engagement next summer as I thoroughly admired this fanciful musical adaptation which accomplished two things for me…
